International Centre for Sports History and Culture

The International Centre for Sports History and Culture was established at ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ in 1996 and is today widely acknowledged as the leading centre for the study of sport history in the world, with some of the foremost historians in the field on its staff.

The Centre’s academic team has published many critically acclaimed books and articles. Major conferences, including ‘Historians on Sport’, 'Female Leadership in International Sport' and 'Boxing History and Culture: New Themes and Perspectives' have been organised by the Centre, often in conjunction with leading European institutions.

Here at the International Centre for Sports History and Culture we share the belief that the study of sport can help illuminate not just the history of recreation but of society and its culture as a whole.

We provide taught courses at postgraduate level including the MA in Sport History and Culture and we are one of three European institutions, along with Université de Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and SDA Bocconi – School of Management (Milan) which work with the Centre International D’Etude du Sport (CIES, Switzerland) to offer the FIFA Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport which has been ranked the No.1 course in Europe by Sport Business in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The Centre also offers opportunities for research students and welcomes applications in all areas of sports history and culture for PhD study.
