Description

Bangladeshi Muslims in the East End: The Changing Landscape of Dress and Language.

Social historian Professor Panikos Panayi joins South Asian Diaspora scholar Dr Fatima Rajina in conversation to present Dr Rajina’s new publication: British Bangladeshi Muslims in the East End: The Changing Landscape of Dress and Language. Departing from a commonplace focus on the sartorial choices of British Muslim women in public discourse, Dr Rajina looks at the evolution of choices and the use of language among British Bangladeshi Men. contextualising the discussion within larger socio-historical trends such as the war on terror. Through a nuanced analysis of British Bangladeshi communities in London’s East-End, the book aims to address the multiple ways British Bangladeshi Muslim men and women create their relationship with dress and language and the impact of such choices in defining social identity.

Join Professor Panayi and Dr Rajina to discuss the intersections of urban living, politics, fashion and community participation that shape the lives of diaspora communities in a post-colonial web of social, cultural, and spatial relations.

This is part of Black History Month.
